  9. This document covers various topics concerning system configuration
  10. issues, and potential conflicts with third-party applications, which are
  11. not covered by the BBEdit Lite User's Manual.

  20. System Requirements
  21. ------ ------------
  22. BBEdit Lite now requires System 7.0 or later in order to operate
  23. correctly. System 7.1 or later is required for use of Macintosh Drag and
  24. Drop, and use of System 7.5 or later is recommended.

  27. "Can't Purge a Locked Block" error
  28. ------ ----- - ------ ------ -----
  29. If you receive this error message when trying to launch BBEdit, your
  30. system has been infected with the MDEF-B virus (or a variant of it). To
  31. correct this, run the Disinfectant utility to identify and repair any
  32. infected files.

  35. Object Support Library Problems
  36. ------ ------- ------- --------
  37. If you are running Mac OS 8.0 or earlier, there is a bug in certain
  38. versions of the Object Support Library, a component of the OS used to
  39. support scriptable applications. 
  40.  
  41. This bug potentially affects all scriptable applications, not just
  42. BBEdit. Inside of BBEdit, the most common manifestation of this problem
  43. is an "insufficient memory" error message that results when you choose
  44. "About BBEdit..." Another frequently reported symptom is that BBEdit's
  45. scripting dictionary is unavailable when using the "Open Dictionary..."
  46. command from Apple's script editor (or other OSA script-authoring
  47. environments).
  48.  
  49. Version 1.2 of the Object Support Library (OSL) corrects the underlying
  50. fault. The updated OSL is included with MacOS 8. If you're using an
  51. earlier version of the OS, you can obtain the latest OSL via anonymous
  52. FTP from <ftp://ftp.scripting.com/apple/objectSupportLib.sit.hqx>.
  53. Please note that if you are using Mac OS 8.1 or later, you do not need
  54. (and should not install), any version of the Object Support Library.

  57. VM 8.0 Fix
  58. -- --- ---
  59. Shortly after the release of Mac OS 8.0, we identified a compatibility
  60. issue, which only arises when using Apple's virtual memory (VM).
  61. Although this issue was originally confirmed to exist on 68040 systems,
  62. we have reason to believe that it may also occur on PowerPC systems.
  63.  
  64. When using our products, the problem manifests itself as generalized
  65. instability when running BBEdit (any version) under Mac OS 8.0 with
  66. virtual memory turned on. BBEdit may sometimes crash when starting up,
  67. but if it doesn't, other misbehaviors will present themselves, such as
  68. errors or garbled text when copying, pasting, or scrolling text.
  69.  
  70. However, the effects of this compatibility issue are not specifically
  71. related to BBEdit, and may affect other applications as well.
  72.  
  73. Mac OS 8.1 corrects this problem, and we strongly recommend that you
  74. obtain and apply the upgrade if you are still running Mac OS 8.0.
  75.  
  76.  
  77. Printing with Substituted Fonts
  78. -------- ---- ----------- -----
  79. Because of idiosyncracies in various printer drivers, including both the
  80. LaserWriter and StyleWriter drivers, there are some character spacing
  81. anomalies when printing with a substituted monospaced font (i.e.
  82. Monaco). To avoid these problems, print in a non-substituted, monospaced
  83. PostScript font such as Courier. (With BBEdit, you can of course edit in
  84. one font, and print in another.)

  87. Fractional Spacing
  88. ---------- -------
  89. BBEdit supports a "Fractional Spacing" option when printing. We
  90. recommend that you use this option if you are printing in a small
  91. (less than 9-point) font size.

  94. FaxSTF "FaxPrint" Printer Driver
  95. ------ ---------- ------- ------
  96. BBEdit is incompatible with various versions of FaxSTF. This
  97. incompatibility will cause BBEdit to crash at various points if FaxSTF
  98. is installed on the machine. Crashes can occur when accessing menus,
  99. opening files and at various other points as well. If you are
  100. experiencing crashes in BBEdit and you have FaxSTF installed on your
  101. machine, we recomend that you remove this as a first step in resolving
  102. the problem.

  110. LaserWriter "Preferences Damaged" Warning
  111. ----------- --------------------- -------
  112. On occasion, version 8.2.2 of the LaserWriter driver will issue a
  113. warning message about missing or damaged preferences. We have contacted
  114. Apple regarding this issue, and they believe it to be due to a bug in
  115. the LaserWriter driver. We have also had reports that the recently
  116. released LaserWriter 8.3 driver may exhibit this same problem.

  118. If you get this message, simply choose "Page Setup" or "Print" from the
  119. File menu, and you should be able to continue without any difficulty.
  120. Upgrading to more recent Mac OS versions with newer LaserWriter drivers
  121. will also cure this problem.

  123.  
  124. Standard File Hacks
  125. -------- ---- -----
  126. There are some third-party extensions which modify the standard "Open"
  127. and "Save" dialogs (known colloquially as "Standard File"). In a couple
  128. of known cases, some of these extensions have a bug which causes
  129. correctly written applications to crash. Specifically:
  130.  
  131.     - "Click, there it is!", version 1.0.1. Version 1.0.4 or later have
  132.        fixed this problem. Registered owners should contact the author 
  133.        for more information.
  134.     
  135.     -  Quickeys version 2.1 also appears to have a similar problem.
  136.        Later versions appear to have corrected this problem; please 
  137.        contact CE Software for an update.
  138.  
  139. If either of these extensions is installed, BBEdit will most likely
  140. crash when trying to bring up a Standard File dialog. (BBEdit's "Open"
  141. and "Save" dialogs should work correctly, but other dialogs, such as 
  142. the File Types section of the preferences dialog, will not.)
  143.  
  144. In addition, problems have been reported in which the Standard File
  145. Package crashes, or BBEdit takes an "emergency exit", when Peter
  146. Lewis' "CDIconKiller" extension is in use.
  147.  
  148. Finally, we have received reports that StuffIt Shortcut will sometimes
  149. cause BBEdit to crash when you choose "Open..." from the File menu.
  150. We are working with Aladdin to identify and resolve this issue.
